BMW N55 vs S55: Which Turbo Six Should You Actually Buy?

They look like relatives — both 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-sixes from the same era. But one is a mass-market engine that happens to be quick, and the other is a hand-built M engine with a closed-deck block and a rod-bearing reputation. Here's the honest comparison for a used buyer.

On paper they're cousins: BMW N55 and S55, both 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-sixes, overlapping years, similar architecture. In practice they were built for completely different jobs — and that shapes everything about what they cost to own.

The N55 is the engine BMW put in everything: a refined, mass-market six that happens to be quick. The S55 is an M Division engine designed to survive sustained abuse, with the hardware — and the maintenance bill — to match.

If you're choosing between, say, a 335i / M235i and an F80 M3 / F82 M4, this is the comparison that matters.

Where they went

  • N55 (2009–2016ish): 335i, 435i, 535i, 640i, M235i, M135i, X3/X4 xDrive35i, X5/X6 xDrive35i — and, notably, the M2 (F87) in its original form.
  • S55 (2014–2020): M3 (F80), M4 (F82/F83), and the M2 Competition/CS.

That M2 overlap is a genuinely useful quirk: the original M2 got the N55, the M2 Competition got the S55. Same body, two very different engines.

The engineering difference that explains everything

The single most important distinction is the block:

  • N55 — open-deck. The top of the cylinders isn't tied into the deck. It's lighter, sheds heat well, and is cheaper to produce — but it's inherently less rigid at the top of the bore.
  • S55 — closed-deck. The cylinders tie into the deck for a far more rigid, sealed structure that handles high cylinder pressure. The bores also use a twin-wire arc-sprayed coating instead of conventional liners — lighter and more sophisticated.

Add the S55's lightweight crankshaft, strengthened pistons and rods, and its bigger cooling and oiling systems, and you have an engine built to be held at high load — the thing that kills ordinary engines.

There's a nuance on the N55 too: early cars used a cast crankshaft, later builds moved to a forged one, which is markedly stronger. Not all N55s are equal.

Reliability: the honest picture

Here's where reputation and reality diverge.

The N55 is the more dependable engine to own — not because it's better engineered, but because it's less stressed. It fixed the N54's biggest headaches (the twin-turbo era's fuel-injector and HPFP misery) by moving to a single twin-scroll turbo. Its common faults are the ordinary kind:

  • Valve cover / gasket leaks — very common, mid-range cost, rarely catastrophic
  • Wastegate rattle — the actuator arms wear loose over time; audible at idle, annoying rather than fatal
  • Charge-pipe cracks, water-pump and thermostat failures, and carbon build-up on the intake valves (as with any direct-injection engine)
  • Rod bearings — increasingly reported as these cars age out of warranty, though far less of a headline than on the S55

The S55 is the stronger engine that demands more of you. Its known issues are a shorter list but a more serious one:

  • Rod bearings — the headline. Many owners replace them preventively; neglect is genuinely engine-ending.
  • Oil cooler seal failure — high damage potential if ignored.
  • Charge-pipe failure and wastegate rattle — same family traits as the N55.
  • The crank hub — shared with the N55, but the S55's higher stress (especially when tuned) is where you hear about it failing. On a stock, well-maintained car it's largely a tuner's concern.

With disciplined short oil-change intervals and preventive bearing work, a well-kept S55 will run to very high mileage. The catch is that "well-kept" is expensive and non-optional.

Tuning: the real reason people choose the S55

If you intend to leave the car stock, the N55 is plenty and the S55's advantages are mostly theoretical.

If you intend to modify it, the gap becomes decisive. The N55's stock block and internals are generally considered good to roughly 550 wheel horsepower before they become the limiting factor. The S55's closed deck, stronger internals and better cooling are what make the big-power builds possible — that's exactly what the hardware was for.

Blunt version: the S55 is the better platform to modify; the N55 is the better engine to simply own.

Which should you buy?

Buy the N55 if:

  • You want a fast, comfortable daily that isn't a project
  • You'd rather spend money on driving than on preventive maintenance
  • You're staying stock or near-stock
  • You want the cheaper entry price and the cheaper ownership

Buy the S55 if:

  • You want a genuine M car — the noise, the chassis, the character
  • You'll do track days or plan serious tuning
  • You can budget preventive rod-bearing work and short oil intervals as normal ownership cost, not a nasty surprise
  • You accept that consumables on an M car are M-priced

A note on price: don't judge an S55 by its purchase price alone. On these cars the running cost is the product price — an M3 bought at the top of your budget with nothing left for bearings and tyres is a car you can't actually afford. What to check on either engine

  • Full oil-change history, and how frequent. On an S55 this is the whole ballgame. Long intervals on a hard-driven M car are a walk-away.
  • Rod bearings: on an S55, ask whether they've been done and for the paperwork. A car with documented recent bearing work is worth more, not less — see our F80 rod bearings guide.
  • Listen at idle for wastegate rattle; look for oil weeping around the valve cover and oil cooler.
  • Evidence of tuning. A flashed ECU isn't automatically bad, but on a crank-hub-sensitive S55 it changes the risk profile — and often the warranty position. Ask directly.
  • Cooling system health — water pump and thermostat are wear items on both.
