Owners rate the iX at the very top of the luxury electric SUV class — and it genuinely beats its official range figures. It also has a recall list and an electronics reputation that should make any used buyer careful about which year they choose. Here's the honest picture.
The BMW iX is one of the more interesting used-EV propositions on the market right now, because two things about it are simultaneously true:
Owners love it. In Consumer Reports' satisfaction ranking for this class it scored 84 — first place, comfortably ahead of the Audi Q8 e-tron (70), Mercedes EQE SUV (54) and Tesla Model X (53). It also beats its official range figures in real-world highway testing, which almost nothing else does.
And its reliability record is genuinely spotty. The 2023 model year alone has been recalled a dozen times, including high-voltage battery actions, and early cars have a well-documented habit of rebooting their infotainment mid-drive.
That gap — beloved but flawed — is the whole story of buying one used. Here's how to land on the right side of it.
The pros
- Ride and refinement. This is the iX's trump card. It's quiet, beautifully damped and genuinely relaxing in a way most rivals aren't — the main reason owner-satisfaction scores are so high.
- Real-world range that over-delivers. Independent highway testing has recorded around 370 miles (≈595 km) from the big-battery car — ahead of its own EPA rating and ahead of a Model X in the same test. Almost every EV disappoints against its official figure; the iX is a rare exception.
- Interior quality. The cabin is one of the best BMW has built — materials, design and screen integration all land well.
- Serious performance where you want it. The xDrive50 makes ~516 hp; the M60 pushes ~610 hp and huge torque, comfortably above an EQE SUV.
- Practicality. Around 36 cu ft behind the seats, up to ~78 with them folded — notably more than a Q8 e-tron.
- Efficiency. For a big, heavy luxury SUV it's genuinely efficient, which is what turns the battery capacity into that real-world range.
The cons and known problems
This is the part the glossy reviews skip.
- Infotainment reboots. The most-reported iX complaint: the central display goes black for 30–60 seconds and restarts, typically on early 2022–2023 cars. Software updates improved it; confirm the car is fully updated.
- High-voltage battery recalls. Certain 2022–2024 xDrive50 cars were recalled over battery cell-monitoring circuit connections that could cause a stall. A subset of 2022–2025 cars had stressed or improperly assembled battery modules requiring replacement. These are serious actions — proof of completion is non-negotiable (see below).
- Charging hardware faults. Some early cars received a replacement combined charging unit after assembly defects that could interrupt power while driving or charging; charge-port actuator and onboard-charger failures are documented.
- Electrical and driver-assist niggles — more of them than you'd expect at this price, plus recurring complaints about climate control and connectivity.
- A heavy recall count. Roughly a dozen NHTSA recalls on the 2023 model year is a lot, and predicted-reliability ratings for the early cars sit below average despite the high satisfaction scores.
- Divisive styling — the grille and face are still an acquired taste, which does affect resale.
The single most useful takeaway: avoid the 2022 model year
The pattern in the data is consistent — 2022 is the year to avoid. It carries the launch software problems, the charging-unit defects and the bulk of the early battery actions. Later cars (2024 onward especially) are materially better sorted. If your budget only reaches a 2022, buy a cheaper, better-sorted rival instead.

- Software version. Sit in the car for ten minutes with the screen running. Confirm it's on current software and watch for a reboot.

The verdict

People who own an iX genuinely love driving it, and they're right to: it rides, drives and travels better than almost anything in its class. But loving a car and it being trouble-free are not the same claim.
Buy a 2024-or-later iX with a clean recall record and full service history, and you're getting arguably the best-driving luxury electric SUV on the used market at a heavy discount to its new price. Buy a cheap 2022 without checking the recalls, and you've bought someone else's battery and software problems.
